The Boyz are back in town

I've been in another one of those lulls recently, where despite painting almost every day it seems like I've had nothing to show for it.
There's been a lot of prep work and stock taking, jars of Dettol and sifting through "the pile" too.

Of note I got myself a multi compartment storage box and transferred all my unpainted Space Orks stuff from their various Chinese Food containers into it and sorted my big bag of arms into pairs- having everything together and on hand ( like I do for my Marines) has gotten me focused again.

A week or so ago I rebased and painted up a heap more Heroquest Orcs and Goblins to add to the monster pool, and this reminded me how much I enjoy painting Greenskins.

So, after selecting my Clan of choice and shaking up the Chaos Black spray-can, I knocked these fellas out over the course of 3 nights.

Blood Axe Nob and 5 boyz, which is half of the first of two squads I have of them.
Bosses, Oddboyz and some tracked vehicles will be following.

I wanted to downplay the "Red Edition" paint scheme as much as I could with these guys, but I think it might be ingrained in me- I didn't give them red boltas so that's gotta count for something, right?

  1. Dude, these are some of your best and probably my favourite of yours. I really like the tones you've chosen, they really look like in that colour illustration with the mek fixing a dread in the middle of the battelefield.
You've kept just enough red I'd say ;)

    1. Thanks mate- that picture was definitely an inspiration, though I actually avoided looking at any art or copying the old studio schemes (like I have done usually) when painting these because I really wanted to just do my own thing here, within parameters.
Your work (and the usual suspects) actually inspired me to do this actually, I look at the stuff you guys do where you just do your own thing and want to dip my toes into that a bit too.

I think the Blood Axes have become my new faves too, I've actually done a bit of "force reorganising" and dedicated some more minis to bulk them out so they will be a larger warband.
Some of the minis have little Iron Crosses on them, they're pretty rad.

  3. Brilliant work mate. Love those old school Blood Axes and you did well to downplay the red on them.

  5. Still very '2nd Ed' - not that there's anything wrong with that at all! That backdrop works well for the photos too =)

  7. Great work! They look excellent, though I am a little bit sad that they don't have red bolters.... :)

By the way, I'll paint those animals one of these days ;)

  8. I love the brighter green skin tones of 2nd edition orks as well as (dare I say it?) the humanity of these minis. I will try and emulate a similar skin tone when I paint my Blood bowl Orc team.

    1. My recipe is really really simple- Goblin Green as a base, Scorpion over the top and then highlight with Sunburst yellow.
There certainly is an element of "humanity" to these chaps, I agree.

  9. Blood Axes are great for several reasons... these ones can add your paintwork to their list :D I can't wait to see more, and as it happens, I don't have to because you've already done another blog post about them! Onwards!
